In the early 1930's Richard E. Fuller, as the President of the Seattle Arts Institute, drafted plans with architect Carl F. Gould for a Seattle Art Museum at Volunteer Park. Funding for the project was obtained from his inheritance and matching funds from the City of Seattle. The project was completed and in June of 1933 the Seattle Art Museum at Volunteer Park was opened to the public.

The Seattle Art Museum at Volunteer Park housed the main collection until moved to a newly constructed Seattle Art Museum in downtown Seattle in 1991. The Seattle Art Museum Museum at Volunteer Park was then closed for renovation and reopened in 1994 as the Seattle Asian Arts Museum.
